Cannes France: More than a glitzy 2 weeks in May!
Cannes, France - whats the first thing you think about? Chances are it's the World famous Cannes Film Festival. And while the film festival keeps this compact cote d'azur city in the news there is more to Cannes, France, than this annual glitzy parade of Hollywood stars and their hangers-on. Only a 40 minute train ride from Nice, Cannes (see this Cannes map) makes an excellent day trip or is worthy as a holiday destination in its own right. The English aristocracy have been coming to Cannes France to enjoy the wonderful Cannes weather, for over 150 years and the up market feel and decadence of the 19th century still exist today. The rhythm of Cannes is gentle if not quite genteel: In summer the sandy beaches are packed with gently bronzing sun worshippers and as the sun sets the visitors promenade along the croisette stopping for cocktails before dining. To the west of the port, looking out from its raised perch sits the Old Town (Le Suquet) a pedestrianized sector packed with great restaurants and a fabulous food market. Perhaps the best view is to be had from the Musee de Castre. Further west again is Cannes La Bocca, a less expensive residential area - kind of Cannes-Lite! Looking over the lot from the hill further inland is Le Cannet an area that has long been popular with artists. If pushed to choose, to really get the whole French Riviera thing we would recommend renting an apartment in Nice Old Town - but to feel like a Hollywood Film Star, there is only one thing for it: you will need to brave the prices of the Cannes hotels. Here is our Cannes Hotel Guide. The Cannes Film Festival first started in 1946 and today it is the Worlds biggest film festival. The people of Cannes have capitalized in its reputation and now there are arts, media and other festivals and congresses all through the year in Cannes. France does indeed have her share of entrepreneurs! The festival and congress visitors coupled with the booming tourist industry along the whole French Riviera mean that many people invest in Cannes property. Take a look at our Cannes property guide for tips and contacts. When you are tired of glitz and glamour take the 15 minute boat ride to the tranquil and beautiful Iles de Lerins. Made famous by the film "The Man in the Iron Mask" the island is a monastic religious haven criss-crossed with walks through the countryside. It is well worth a visit - don't fancy the regular boat trip? How about hiring a guided kayak or renting your own gin-palace from one of the Cannes yacht charter companies!
