Your Nice City Guide - Everything you need to know about Nice, Capital of the French Riviera
The beauty of its setting (see this Nice Map) and its wonderful climate have made Nice city a favoured tourist destination for nearly 200 years. Nice is France's 5th largest city and balances traditional aristocratic glamour with a modern funky energy. (Here is your Nice What's On Guide). The rich and famous still come here for the luxury shopping, casinos, opera and upscale restaurants. But so do a younger cooler crowd attracted by the pavement cafes, funky urban bars, festivals, and arty independent shops. And of course everyone loves the magnificent azur blue sweep of the Bay of Angels!
Old Nice. The higgledy-piggledy maze of pastel-coloured streets (see photo above)that makes up Nice city's Old Town is rightly the favoured destination for most people on a Nice vacation. (Rent an Old Town Nice apartment). Right by the sea front just to the west of the colline du chateau, Old Nice is packed with things to see and do. It is not that long ago however when the Old Town was a crime ridden poverty stricken no-go area. Today the trendy bohemian residents help to give the Old Town its villagey feel. The new residents live harmoniously side by side with the remaining authentic Old Nice families.
New Town. Surrounding Old Nice is the new town. This has a very different feel to the Old Town - wide boulevards, stucco apartment buildings, designer shops and all the modern facilities one associates with a large city. The designer shopping is just to the West of the Old Town and most visitors on a Nice vacation tend to hug the 8km (5 mile long) promenade.
